WORKSHOP: DEALING WITH BULLYING IN THE WORKPLACE

Course Content

A practical workshop for Managers, Human Resources, Trade Unionists, Contact Personnel and all those concerned with preventing and dealing with workplace bullying. The workshop can be used for all personnel to raise awareness of bullying.

The ABC provides a workshop which will increase and build skills

  • To identify bullying and harassment behaviours
  • To recognise symptoms presented by recipients of bullying behaviour
  • To understand why some people resort to bullying behaviour
  • To identify reasons organisational causes which have been associated with high rates of bullying
  • To deal effectively with allegations of bullying

Training Methods

The workshop is interactive using group discussions, case studies, and role plays to consolidate information presented.

The workshop presenters are practitioners and researchers and have combined their experience to present a practical workshop. Information presented also includes current research and best practice in the area of workplace bullying in Ireland and Europe.

Course Content

Nature of bullying

Behaviours that are normally considered to be bullying will be identified and differentiated from acceptable management practices and normal behaviours between work colleagues.

Organisational Causes and Effects on Organisations:

Bullying is detrimental to both the working group and the organisation. Factors that allow bullying to thrive will be covered in this session.

Profile of Recipients of Bullying Behaviours and Perpetrators:

An understanding of why some people bully others and how/why they select their targets.

Effects on Recipients / Witnesses:

The effects on people who are bullied are generally severe and have been the cause of suicidal ideation. If employers are aware of the impact of bullying they can recognise the effects and work towards its prevention.

Options open for Recipients;

Options for recipients of bullying behaviours include informal and formal investigations, facilitated meetings between the parties involved, and mediation. A brief overview of the legal options open to recipients of bullying behaviours is included.

Other topics including conflict resolution, interviewing skills, and leadership can be incorporated on request.

Course Availability and Contact Numbers

We cater for both large and small organisations who wish to avail of this training and also for individuals interested in the field.

Workshops are held in Trinity College throughout the year to cover training for individuals in particular areas. Contact information below for dates.

Workshops are also carried out for organisations either on site or in a location nearby. In this case workshop content can be arranged to accommodate the needs of such organisations.

The workshop is normally of one-day duration. However, if staff cannot be released for this length of time, a shortened version of the workshop can be devised.

In order that the participants receive the full benefit of the practical nature of the workshop, the numbers will be restricted to a maximum of twenty.
